See Manville. Biographical Dictionary: Bindley, James (1737–1818), of Somerset Place. Commissioner of Stamp Duties. FSA 1765. “In the forming of his valuable collections [of coins, medals, books, prints, portraits], he received great assistance from the situation he held at the Stamp-office … which gave him a ready communication with every town in the kingdom, in most of which he found an useful assistant in his researches” (GM). Bindley was an indefatigable editor, reading every sheet of his friend John Nichol’s Literary Anecdotes (8 volumes, 1812–15). In the preface to the edition of John Evelyn’s Diary (1818), the antiquary William Bray (1736–1832) acknowledged Bindley’s assistance with notes and corrections, and in the second edition he laments his recent death.
