Description Folio, pp. (10), lxxxiii, (i), (12), 162, (3). 18 finely-engraved plates, mounted onto thicker stock; additional plate in smaller format tipped in preceding the main text. Some age browning, but generally a clean and fresh copy of this scarce volume, in the original printed bounds, neatly back in cloth, black morocco label, gilt. Ex library; with labels on endpapers; the stamp of the Myntkabinett of the University of Kristiania; and a nice presentation note from the Director, dated October 1921. Very scarce, and still an indispensable work for serious students. Clain-Stefanelli 7320. Grierson p. 188 (“Un immense in-folio, avec une documentation considerable") Claudius Jacob Schive, 1792-1878, was a Customs’ Inspector in Stavanger from 1840. Recognized as Norway’s leading numismatist, he was the author of numerous articles on the subject and on Stavanger cathedral. He was the foremost numismatist of his generation, and a leading collector of Norwegian coins, and donated a collection of more than 2200 coins to Bergen Museum. In 1865 he jpublished the main work on Norwegian coins of the Middle Ages.
