Annals of the Coinage of Great Britain, Third (best) edition, 1840 |
Description |
Annals of the Coinage of Great Britain and its dependencies; from the earliest period to the reign of Victoria. Third (best) edition, London, 1840. Three volumes. Quarto, pp. (xxii), 422, 520; Plan of the Royal Mint. 160 engraved plates of the coins; with the engraved map of Mint towns, often lacking. Whilst the text is quite clean, the plates are a trifle browned, as usual. A particularly good set in 19th half calf, marbled boards, neatly and attractively re-backed; raised bands, back gilt; minimal wear at extremities. From the library of Alfred Wigan, with his armorial engraved ex-libris in all three volumes. Still essentially the most valuable source work. Ruding died in 1820 and this, the last and best edition, was edited and brought up to date by Akerman and some other leading numismatist of the period. |
