Quarto, printed title, engraved title; pp. 10, 96; (additional pages: 67*-74* inclusive), 40 finely- engraved plates, including title; engraved headings and end-piece. Contemporary calf-backed marbled paper-covered boards, joints broken and both boards loose; back gilt, but worn at top and base, with two small sections missing; marbled end-papers; Lenton Priory engraved armorial ex libris on pastedown; later printed bookplate on free endpaper. Contents exceptionally clean and fresh. Significantly scarcer and more handsomely produced than the first edition published almost 30 years earlier in 1753. Extremely scarce second edition of Vertue’s masterpiece.
Vertue died in 1756 and this second edition was edited by Richard Gough. It includes transcriptions of documentary sources.
