Ancient Coin Auction Catalogues 1880-1980. London, 2009
Description
Quarto, pp. (xl), 374. Illustrated throughout. Laminated boards. New. This highly-recommended new bibliography is a ground-breaking work. It lists 886 auction catalogues that include ancient coins, and which took place between 1880 (the date when the first photographic plates were included in such sales) and 1980. Fascinating, and often totally unpublished biographical and other details are included of the collectors, the dealers and the auctioneers behind the sales and the collections. The volumes is profusely illustrated with portraits of the collectors and the dealers, the auctioneers and also the premises where the sales took place. The author is to be congratulated for having the confidence to take on all the pre-publication and printing costs himself. A "Spring number" must surely become the norm in the future whenever, and wherever, auction sale catalogues covering ancient coins are offered for sale.
