Quarto, two parts in one volume; pp. iv, 161 (1); 120 +12; (121)-216. 67 finely engraved plates. Contemporary or late 18th century polished full speckled calf; upper and lower covers intricately tooled in gilt at edges, repeated at edges of boards. Later re-backed in imitation speckled calf; old label preserved, title in gilt; raised bands; joints strengthened with marbled paper; upper inner joint cracking; lower joint holding; red page edges. Modern printed ex-libris on first free endpaper.18th century ex-libris of John Mitford above. Folkes had died in 1754. This, the “Best edition” according to Lowndes, was edited by John Ward and Andrew Gifford, under the auspices of the Society of Antiquaries. Francis Perry engraved most of the fine plates. An important work, seldom offered complete as here, and regarded as the first major attempt at a comprehensive illustrated record of the English coinage. An appealing volume. |
