Tables of English Silver and Gold Coins, 1763 |
Description |
First published by Martin Folkes, Esq: and Now Re-printed, By the Society of Antiquaries, London, 1763. Quarto, two volumes; pp. iv, 161 (1); 120 +12; (121)-216; 6 engraved Supplemental plates; 67 finely-engraved plates in total. Uniformly bound in contemporary or late 18th century polished full speckled calf; raised bands; joints strengthened with tape; red page edges, average wear. Large ex-libris extracted from the Plates’ volume. Martin Folkes had died in 1754. This, the “Best edition” according to Lowndes, was edited by John Ward and Andrew Gifford, under the auspices of the Society of Antiquaries. Francis Perry engraved most of the fine plates. An important fouindation work, seldom offered complete, as here, and regarded as the first major attempt at a comprehensive illustrated record of the English coinage. An appealing set of two volumes.
Ex Assay Office Library, Birmingham, with their distinctive circular ink stamp on endpaper of each volume.
