Contemporary mottled sheep; crimson lettering piece; minor wear, mor so on the lower board; minor worm holes at base of back; small stain at upper margin, with no affect to printed text; generally clean and fresh throughout; embossed ownership stamp at margin of half title; neat contemporary signature along-side. First edition, and published as the second part of Tratado das partidas dobradas, Lisboa, 1792.
This elusive work begins with a long essay on the money of the Jews, Greek, and Romans, and on other material used as money, such as shells and fruit. Pages 117-280 comprise the actual dictionary- an alphabetical listing of coins in use at the time of publication, as well as imaginary coins, and giving the approximate value in Portuguese reis; this section deals also with coins used in Portuguese colonies such as Angola, Mozambique, Goa and Brazil (pages 187-209). The following section includes tables converting European currencies, including weights, for use in trading commodities such as diamonds, gold etc. The final section deals with the converting the weights to the system used in Paris and Lisbon.
Porbase locates four copies in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, and one in the Biblioteca Central da Marinha.
