Two volumes. Text and Plates. Quarto, frontispiece portrait of the Emperor of Annam (1897); pp (iv), 232; xxxiv. Plates - Oblong quarto, 40 fine plates; unobtrusive circular embossed blind-stamps on the plates and on title page of the text volume; oval library stamp on verso of title page to each volume. (Cancelled) printed library label on endpaper of each volume; printed label with Class Number in ink on endpaper of each volume. Uniformly bound in contemporary dark green pebbled cloth, small portion lacking from top of back of the text volume; similar portion missing from top of the volume of plates, upper board loose on the latter; backs gilt with the library class number in gilt at base of each. Contents essentially clean and fresh and in surprisingly fresh condition internally. A rare and desirable set of books. £1250

An extremely rare work, seldom offered for sale, and in fact this appears to be the first example we can recall handling for more than 40 years. George Kolbe offered an example in a 1994 sale.
