Title Enamelled Impressions struck off from the splendid series of medal dies, illustrative of the Holy Scriptures, engraved by British artists in the employ of the author. No place. (London or Birmingham). No date. (1830 ?).
Description Two volumes. Quarto; 60 plates of impressions of medallions illustrating scenes from the Bible, each on thick green glazed card (7.5 cm in diameter), each protected with tissue guard, and each with descriptive text facing. All mounted, and as issued within typographic border, facing cherubs at top of each page. New card paper protective inserts bound in, serving to protect the raised embossed medallions. Attractively bound in two volumes in crimson full morocco, gilt decorated at centre of each cover, gilt rules; back gilt, black title labels, gilt. Each volume contained in marbled paper-covered slipcase. Extremely fine throughout. Rare thus. £1800 Sir Edward Thomason (1769 – 1849) manufacturer, entrepreneur and inventor, was the son of a button-manufacturer in Birmingham. He completed this series of sixty large medals on Biblical subjects from pictures by the Old Masters. He presented the actual medals to all the Sovereigns of Europe and in return received marks of honour and gifts. He held the office of Vice-Consul for Birmingham for eight foreign Governments, held eight Foreign Orders of Knighthood, and was Knighted by William IV in 1832.
